Blessing to God before study

The Hebrew text below is a famous passage from the Hebrew Old Testament (Hebrew Bible from this point forward).  Many of the words and grammar used in these lessons are taken, almost exclusively, from this passage. You should be able to comfortably read and understand this passage by the end of the fourth lesson.

Do not be intimidated by the odd looking letters. You will learn them easily as we go along. For now, though, simply listen to the passage. Do not try to read the words. Just listen enough times to pick up its rhythm and tonal variations[1]Abraham Shmueloff is the reader I use. בְּרֵאשִׁית בָּרָא אֱלֹהִים אֵת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְאֵת הָאָרֶץ וְהָאָרֶץ הָיְתָה תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ וְחֹשֶׁךְ עַל־פְּנֵי תְהוֹם וְרוּחַ אֱלֹהִים מְרַחֶפֶת עַל־פְּנֵי הַמָּיִם וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים יְהִי אוֹר וַיְהִי־אוֹר ♦ וַיַּרְא אֱלֹהִים אֶת־הָאוֹר כִּי־טוֹב וַיַּבְדֵּל אֱלֹהִים בֵּין הָאוֹר וּבֵין הַחֹשֶׁךְ וַיִּקְרָא אֱלֹהִים לָאוֹר יוֹם וְלַחֹשֶׁךְ קָרָא לָיְלָה וַיְהִי־עֶרֶב וַיְהִי־בֹקֶר יוֹם אֶחָד
